Working takes up the majority of time in the average persons life and to some retirement can seem a little bit daunting. One way to help people to make the transition is to celebrate their working life and help them look forward to their free time however they choose to spend it.
To get you started here are details of both traditional and slightly more outrageous retirement party ideas to help you to give that extra special send off.
Try to reinact a "This is Your Life" episode. One person needs to be the 'narrator' with the traditional red book to read out of. This is a great way to remember funny times in the persons life and reintroduce old school friends and work colleagues. It will, of course, take a lot of
planning
but will be worth it in the end when people are reunited. Class of ?? reunion - If the retiree has been local for most of his life then this is a good idea as you could hold the party in the actual school hall. Its also easier to contact old school mates if you know the year they were at school. All schools have class lists for admin purposes and with facebook and twitter contacting lost friends has never been easier.
Retro Party - fill the room with whatever items the retiree most remembers from his/her youth. From telephones to sweets, lava lamps to record players all of these items will bring back memories. Add relevant posters and pictures and ask the guests to dress accordingly. Fancy Dress Party - Whether your favourite era is the 40's, 50's, 60's or any other, fancy dress to match an era is a good idea. Many people have accessories from these eras tucked away in their homes and they will love digging them out. Complete the party with music and food from the relevant era also. Formal Dinner Party - for a more intimate party invite close friends or colleagues around for a fantastic
dinner party
This is a better idea if you have a specific close circle of friends who you'd like to help you celebrate. Just because it is small doesn't mean it has to be plain! get the dinner jackets and the ball gowns out and you will all look fab.
Golf/Spar Weekend - If you know the retiree is not a big fan of parties and really doesn't like being the center of attention then send him/her off with a firend for a relaxing golf or spar weekend. They will appreciate it and wont feel under pressure to 'entertain' as they would at a party.
parachute jump - An idea for the more adventurous among you. Some people feel around this time that they've not really done anything exciting with their lives. What a better way to start retirement with an adrenaline rush! go on - they might like it!
Tea Dance - the traditional tea dance doesn't really need any more explanation! It is ideal for someone who fancies a get together but would like to take things a little more slowly than the usual disco.
Cinema Party - You can hire home cinema systems these days. This is a particularly good idea if certain films from the past hold significant memories for the retiree and his/her close friends.
Wine Tasting - A more traditional option for someone who enjoys the finer things in life. You could go all out and book a wine tasing weekend in France for that extra special gift.
Quiz Night - A fun idea for the more competitive among you. The quiz master can ask questions on themes related to a specific era or time in the retiree's life.
